A cherished Federation home thoughtfully adapted to grow alongside a young family.
Riverview presented a familiar but nuanced challenge: a character-filled Federation home with beautiful original detailing and strong architectural bones, purchased by a young family who wanted to preserve everything they loved about the home while adapting it to support the evolving needs of family life. While rich in character, the home offered significant opportunity to improve functionality, with limited storage, underutilised spaces and an outdoor environment that did not reflect the way the family wanted to live.
Initially focused on addressing these key challenges, the engagement evolved over multiple stages, with each commission building upon the last to shape a home that felt increasingly cohesive, functional and deeply personal. The design extended well beyond aesthetics, requiring thoughtful spatial planning, joinery design and technical design resolution to modernise the home while respecting its heritage. Existing spaces were carefully reconfigured to improve flow and functionality, with the lower-level family living area transformed into a more versatile multi-purpose space, custom joinery introducing much-needed storage throughout the home, the kitchen thoughtfully modernised within its existing footprint, and the former laundry completely reimagined as a combined bathroom and laundry to better support the changing rhythms of family life.
A restrained material palette and refined detailing created a calm backdrop, allowing the beautiful Federation architecture, leafy outlook and carefully curated interiors to remain the defining features of the home.
Beyond the interiors, the engagement extended to a complete redevelopment of the landscape. Working in collaboration with the landscape team, the design direction centred on creating a garden of connected experiences rather than a single outdoor space. Areas for entertaining, dining, relaxing, swimming and play were carefully layered throughout the site, ensuring every part of the landscape had a distinct purpose while feeling intrinsically connected to the home. The upper-level entertaining terrace was also thoughtfully reimagined, strengthening the relationship between the home’s interior and outdoor living through carefully considered material selections and detailing.
The result is a home that honours its heritage while embracing the evolving rhythms of family life, a home that feels timeless, deeply personal and designed to support its family for many years to come.
Inside the Project: A Selection of Pre-Renovation Images
The open-plan interior was shaped into distinct yet connected zones, giving each area a clear purpose while preserving a natural sense of continuity.
Custom pieces were designed to support this approach, their proportions and placement guiding movement through the living space. Curves and angles respond to the surrounding architecture, while a cohesive material palette creates unity throughout.
